Hollow Light

I miss our long drives
Going nowhere at 2 a.m.

I miss the kingdom
Where our problems
Were possibilities

Now we live in the land of loss
Quiet now
As we watch the waves
Beguile the shore

A shroud
Clouds the details
A hood pulled up
Obscures us

We are nothing
Yet we are vital
As the void casts hollow light
We stand between it
Our shadows are our armor

But now the world retreats
We remember what it’s like
To need

Turn on the headlights, my friend
Let’s find nowhere again

You saw fairies and shadows that dance
You saved bunnies and strays
You knew what it felt like

You created a whole word
Bright and beautiful
In the eyes of your daughter

You had the kindest heart

And honesty that had teeth

You left me breathless
Jealous
That this brown eyed girl
Could ever be the beautiful a forest nymph

You took everything
Into yourself
But at the end
You trusted me

One last glorious gift

Out of all the people who have loved me

Off to play hide and seek
With the other half of your soul
